Workaholics tend to be more successful when it comes to creating and managing business, but when it comes to over working there have been several dangers linked, and damaging your mental health is just one of these factors.
A new study has revealed that how increasing numbers of employees are now working outside of office hours and although they may be expanding and furthering their careers they are putting their well being at risk, as eating and sleeping patterns tend to deteriorate, and some people have even said they feel that they were starting to suffer from withdrawal symptoms when it comes to being separated from their laptops. The academics stated that from what they have learnt from their findings, 516 men and women aged between 18-65 were those most at risk of becoming addicted to using the internet, not the young or unemployed people that they expected. The researchers of the study were quite surprised when they found that it was the more hard working candidates with career jobs spending all their time on the web.
With this in mind employers should be aware of any extra work employees are doing in their free time to avoid any problems that may occur to the workers mental health, the employee should also be taking care for themselves and making sure that they avoid getting too over worked and maintain taking valuable breaks from working and using computers.
A study that was revealed also explained how people are becoming addicted to browsing the web as a result of spending all their time using a computer for work purposes, as this often leads to the worker using the web to browse and socialise also, which makes them most likely to suffer from isolation, anxiety and depression. When the employee eventually goes back to work they will most likely begin feeling more stress from the symptoms they have previously gained from working late and constantly using a computer.
A poll that took place found that British workers would rather have no water and heat supply than lose their internet connection at home, which just goes to show how much technology has taken over the world in just a few years, this is worrying to see as people tend to rely solely on technology now. Going back only a few years ago, we only had the use of sending letters via post or fax as there was no email. Who knows what new technology we will have at our disposal in the future, technology as it has defiantly taken over people’s lives and it seems we could not now imagine life without any internet services which is upsetting to see as it has such an powerful impact on our lives.
