Whenever you talk to someone about their work and what motivates them, most people would say a higher wage would be their best motivation. Many people will take a job they are not happy with if the wage is adequate. It is no secret that happy and satisfied employees are a key ingredient to a successful company, but what are the best ways to motivate your employees? Well there are many ways to do this that do not include giving them a pay rise.
The first way to motivate your employees is to give them praise when they deserve it. This will show them that you notice the hard work that they are putting in and will motivate them to continue and do better. Even though you probably think that just acknowledging your employees work will not motivate them, it will. For example if one of your employees was to go home and do some work over the weekend then come back in to work and get no recognition for the extra work put in, they will be less likely to do it again. Whereas if you praise them for their hard work it could encourage them to do it again, which is something you want from your employees as working at home is going the extra mile.
The next way you can motivate your employees is to listen to what they have to say and give them what they need, (to a certain extent of course!). Some bosses assume that all their employees have everything they need to do their job effectively, but sometimes this is not the case. This is why listening is important because when one of your employees is asking for something that is reasonable and will help them work better, it is advisable to consider their request, especially if it is going to increase the work they can do. Also by you providing them with what they need, you are showing that you care about their needs and this will motivate them to work harder to do their best for you as people work better for someone they like.
The third way you could motivate your employees is by getting all your employees engaged in a project together. This will get them all involved with planning and decision making together, which could lead to becoming something they really care for, but why? Well the main reason is because when someone is given a bit of power over a project they start to care and want to do the best they can with it. Some companies may not be able to do big projects that their employees can get involved in so instead go around your employees and get their opinions on changes that may be happening to the business, listen to their ideas and what they have to say. Even if you do not go with their ideas they will still appreciate the fact that you took the time to listen to what they had to say.
Another way to motivate your employees is by creating a fun work place, this is important as this can affect the mood of your employees every day. Most work places tend to be boring and you can really tell as the mood of the work place really effects how your employees feel. A fun work place really pays off as you will find that your employees will do more work in a relaxed, fun environment compared to the dull work environments that usually occur and leave their employees feeling stressed and bored.
Finally, a great way to motivate and get the best out of your employees is an incentive! Whether it be giving money or prizes for passing their personal targets or giving it to one employee at the end of the month who has out preformed the rest of the employees. This way of motivation is essentially a way to get your employees to compete against each other so that they work harder for the end prize, this is a great way of motivating employees as competition brings out the best in people and will show who your best employees are. Also the goal for extra money or a prize is something that motivates most people to go the extra mile as long as it is something that interests them.
These are some of the best ways to motivate your employees in my opinion, I am sure you can tell that most of these methods to motivate staff stem from showing that you care by listening or noticing that they were working hard. The benefits you receive from having motivated employees is important as this will lead to them being hard working which is a key part of any successful company.
