There is an estimated 200 million tons of plastic produced and thrown away every year. This is extremely bad news for the environment in areas where the plastic accumulates. For example there is an estimated 5 trillion pieces of plastic floating through the ocean at this moment in time. The plastic is a threat to marine life as they can get caught in the plastic or accidentally ingest them, but what can be done to stop this? Most people believe there is little or nothing to be done that will not be extremely costly and require substantial man power. However there is one 20 year old who believes he has the solution. The founder and CEO of company ‘The Ocean Cleanup Boyan Slat’ announced they are going to be deploying the world’s first system that will safely remove plastic waste from the ocean by next year. This is something that the environment is crying out for. The waste build up on the Earth shores and in the ocean is increasing daily and is effecting marine life too much for nothing to be done!
The structure that the 20 year old has designed will float, buffed along by the oceans current, and snare plastic bottles and other waste which will then be picked up by a conveyer belt. The debris trapping system will be the longest floating structure in the ocean at over 2000 meters. The Ocean Cleanup Boyan Slat plans to deploy the floating structure off the shores of Japan in early 2016, where it will be in operation for at least two years.
The CEO of The Ocean Cleanup Boyan Slat said that taking care of the world’s ocean garbage problem is one of the largest environmental challenges mankind faces today. Not only will this first clean-up contribute to cleaner waters and coastline but simultaneously is an essential step towards their goal of cleaning up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. What are your thoughts on the issue, do you think something needs to be done to lower the amount of waste in the ocean?
