Here are a few causes of stinky breath! We have all experienced the discomfort of engaging in conversation with somebody in which is unaware of the stench being released from their mouth. Not all cases can be prevented due to various reasons however many can. 90% of odor does actually come from the mouth itself, this is caused either by food you have consumed or a build up of bacteria in which is already present. This means that the built up bacteria reacts with the food you consume, blood and your mouth tissue… this creates volatile, sulfur compounds (the source of the stench) This is why cleaning is thoroughly is vital in order to prevent any build up. Often bad breath can simply be down to what your eating, the top five worst contenders are Tobacco, onions, garlic and alcohol, these products have a strong scent even before consumption and so this lingers around once consumed. Plant oils within are absorbed, the byproducts then enter our bloodstream meaning that we are in actual fact exhaling the odor out through our lungs long after using the product. On the occasion unpleasant breath can be a sign of an underlying illness. Such as: Gastro esophageal reflux disease (‘GERD’), this is a backflow of acid coming from the stomach to the esophagus. Diabetes can also cause this. It is a rare case however liver/ kidney disease can all be responsible for this as toxins from organs travel through the lungs causing bad breath.
