Marshmallows were originally made from the sap of marshmallow plants and were used to treat coughs and sore throats. They were liked so much that they started being consumed as a sweet treat and were made by hand. The demand became so big that the marshmallow makers had to come up with ideas to make them on a larger scale. These days they are made from whipped sugar and coated with corn starch. Often consumed as a sweet treat melted on sticks over a camp fire.
