In the search to discover if we are alone in this vast universe, scientists have found what appears to be a rocky world that is orbiting a Sun like star that is at a similar distance to that of Earth to the Sun. Even though other habitable planets have been found before, this is the first that could possibly be another Earth. This rocky planet is called Kepler 452b and was found by NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope, the planet is located 1,400 light years from Earth so plans to visit are not looking likely to happen in the near future.
The Kepler 452b orbits 384.84 Earth days and is 5% more distant from its Sun than Earth is to its Sun, the planet is in a place where it is not too hot or too cold for liquid water to form. Kepler 452b is not the first Earth like planet to be discovered in a habitable area as last year the world was fascinated with the discovery of Kepler 186f, but the planet orbited a Red Dwarf star which was smaller and cooler than the Sun. The planet 452b on the other hand orbits an almost exact clone of the Sun.
However it should be noted that the Sun Kepler 452b orbits is 1.5 billion years older than the Sun Earth orbits. This means that the increased energy it produces could cause the oceans on Kepler 452b to slowly evaporate, which lowers its chance of been habitable. Kepler 452b, if not habitable, can provide an insight to what Earth could be like in the future and give them an idea about what they need to do.
