Fact of the day… Here are a few ways in which you can help ease congestion on the chest in the upcoming cold winter weather. Expectorants are great as they break up the mucus making it easier to cough up the unwanted build up. Many of these can be bought from over the counter however be careful to purchase the correct product. Avoid suppressants as they’re purpose is to minimize coughing, this unfortunately can cause the mucus on the chest to thicken only resulting in it being worsened and much more difficult to get up. In this cold weather I know it can be difficult to cut out salt, sugar and fried foods however they each increase the production of mucus meaning your situation isn’t going to be helped by consuming these, this also applies for dairy products. Healthier options are really beneficial, garlic, citrus fruits, ginger, pineapple and spicy foods all help to clear the built up mucus and can even help to decrease the production.
