Cold sore’s… these little blighters usually crop up around the mouth and on the lips, although highly contagious they are not dangerous. Roughly 60 percent of the population have suffered a cold sore at some point in their life. Cold sores are caused by a virus… this virus being herpes simplex 1, a descendant of herpes simplex 2, yes this is the virus that causes the commonly known sexual disease. This virus resides in a dormant state within our bodies nerve cells, due to our immune system we are usually able to keep the virus in its inactive state. When infected and a trigger comes along such as our immune systems being weakened, we are left exposed allowing for cold sores to rapidly multiply and spread down the nerve cells resulting in them then breaking out onto the skin, most commonly the lips. The main triggers for cold sores are as follows: Stress levels, infections (Anything in which weakens the immune system.), Cold weather/ sunlight, menstrual cycle and also irritation of the lips.
