Fruitcake is one of the best foods to take with you when travelling to Antarctica as it is high in fat and sugar. This is one of the reasons why Robert Falcon Scott took some with him as he travelled to Antarctica between 1913 and 1920 as he was on expedition.
Conservators part of New Zealand based Antarctic Heritage Trust are the ones who found the fruitcake, most likely made Huntley & Palmers. The 100 year old fruitcake was found in a hut in Cape Adare, also known as Antarctica’s oldest building. Robert Falcon Scott and 4 others part of the Expedition’s Northern Party died on their journey back to base but took shelter in the Cape Adare hut. The conservators found the fruitcake still wrapped in the paper it was packaged in. The tin container was in poor condition, however the fruitcake was found in excellent condition, still looking and smelling almost edible.
