The film ‘Rhythm is it’ shows the journey of 250 young people in Berlin working together through the art of dance. Simon Rattle’s project aimed to bring together groups from all different backgrounds, classes and sexes, with a wide age group of students. Concentration and self-discipline was an issue at the beginning but the project encouraged the children to work together and to be passionate. The project was successful in bringing together all types of young people to put on a spectacular performance.
The general consensus was that even though ballet and opera should be for everyone, advertisement is aimed at the upper classes and prices make it inaccessible to a majority of people. It was agreed that the arts are essential to society but the group was divided on how important they are. Some believed that the arts play an important role in culture and individuality, whereas others thought that academic subjects are much more of a priority.
Personally I think the arts are very important to society as they allow artistic individuals to be expressive. It is a good way of expressing feelings in a productive way. It is important for some people who may not be that academic as they are able to excel with their artistic talents. I enjoy the theatre, especially musicals and dance performances. I believe that more emphasis should be put on the arts in schools.
