Researchers have recently discovered that if people over the age of 50 started to eat just one apple a day, deaths that occur from heart attacks and strokes could be avoided every year in the UK. As Eating fruit and vegetables everyday is just one of the many ways to stay healthy and absorb vitamins into the human body. Apples also give a similar boost to cardiovascular health as medicines do.
A recent survey that took place showed how most adults do not regularly consume their 5 a day portion of fruit and vegetables. It has also being said that if adults of all ages started to consume even more fruit and vegetables of the daily recommended amount, as many as 11,000 vascular deaths could be prevented each year. The old saying of “an apple a day keeps the doctors away “ should be a saying the over 50’s that are more prone to the disease keep in mind as this could actually help change their lives.
About 8 million people in the UK take statins daily; this is a drug which treats people who may be suffering from high cholesterol. Some experts believe that giving this medication to an extra 5 million people would help save around about 2,000 lives every year. While researchers believe this may be a benefit to the public there can also be side effects for taking this drug which is a rising fear in many as these can range from stomach upsets to more serious conditions such as lung disorders.
Dr Peter Coleman, of the Stroke Association said that everyone would majorly benefit from eating a balanced diet. “Apples have long been known as a natural source of antioxidants and chemical compounds called flavanoids, all of which are good for our health and well being.
“This study shows that, as part of a healthy diet with plenty of fresh fruit and veg, a daily apple could help to reduce the risk of stroke and heart disease.”
A member of the British Heart Foundation, Maureen Talbot stated that “Fruit is good for you but you shouldn’t replace heart medicines such as statins. This study reiterates that statins save lives.”
